Remuera Chinese Methodist Church
This project combines earthquake strengthening, refurbishment, alterations, and the addition of new buildings and spaces to an old church and its premises.
The main construction works include earthquake strengthening of the church roof using structural steel, bracing for the existing pipe organ, and repairing a large, decorated timber-framed window. Additionally, alterations and further works are undertaken in the hall, along with refurbishment of the existing walls and ceiling. The project also involves the construction of a new classroom block and a new kitchen building.
Challenges include merging old and new construction, repairing heritage features, and managing planning and construction methodologies and sequencing due to limited access and the fragile condition of the existing structures. There is also a limited pool of specialist subcontractors for heritage repairs, leading to longer lead times and higher costs due to limited competition. Further, access is restricted by protected trees, narrow roads with resident parking on both sides, and overhead power lines. The presence of shallow volcanic basalt rocks also contributes to delays in consent approvals and budgeting challenges.
Overcoming these challenges requires effective planning, quick decision-making, constant supervision, and innovative design and construction methods. AULFON looks forward to completing the project on time, to the highest quality, and within budget.
